CDHR Condemns Extrajudicial Killing in Delta, Demands Prosecution of Culpable Officers

The Committee for the Defense of Human Rights (CDHR) has issued a stern condemnation of the extrajudicial killing of a 28-year-old man, identified in reports from April 2026 as Mene Ogidi, by an officer attached to the Effurun Area Command of the Delta State Police Command.

In a press statement signed by National President Dr. Kehinde Prince Taiga, the human rights group described the act as a “reprehensible” and “grave violation” of the right to life guaranteed under Section 33 of the 1999 Constitution. The incident, which was captured in a widely circulated viral video, reportedly showed a restrained suspect being shot at close range despite pleading for his life.

The CDHR has called on the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to initiate a thorough and impartial investigation.

Dr. Taiga emphasized that the findings must be made public and that any officer found guilty should face the full weight of the law.

“The deceased was entitled to due process and fair hearing,” the statement read. “No law enforcement officer has the authority to act as judge, jury, and executioner under any circumstances.”

The rights group further urged the IGP to issue strict directives to officers within the Delta State Command to end the culture of:
Unlawful killings and illegal arrests
Extortion and prolonged detention

While the Delta State Police Command has since confirmed the arrest of ASP Nuhu Usman and his transfer to Force Headquarters in Abuja for disciplinary action, the CDHR maintains that accountability is the only way to prevent the total erosion of public confidence in the Nigeria Police Force.

The CDHR reiterated its zero-tolerance policy for human rights violations, insisting that justice in this tragic case “must not only be done but must be seen to be done.”
